Space and Time in 2022

Looking back on our first year

Catherine Daly

Head of Product Marketing

2022 has been a big year for Space and Time! This year, we turned the ambitious idea of building the first Web3-native data warehouse into a reality. Our team, partners, investors, and community have so much to be proud of and even more to look forward to. Check out some of the highlights from our year.

Building the team

In one short year, Space and Time has grown from a couple of co-founders to a team of over 40 talented and dedicated professionals. As the team has expanded, innovation has continued to accelerate. Though Space and Time is a fully remote company, we had several opportunities to meet and bond with our coworkers in person this year.

All hands on deck

In October, we gathered for the first in-person company all-hands meeting. We celebrated our strategic funding round, and each department had a chance to demo what they’d been working on. The all-hands meeting was an opportunity for everyone to witness firsthand the hard work that each team member is putting in to drive Space and Time forward.

Working remotely together

Our SoCal-based company is spread out across the U.S. and beyond, and team members located in the same cities regularly gather for workdays and happy hours. The flexibility of remote work has allowed us to bring our best, most productive selves to the table every day, while the company’s collaborative culture has encouraged us to connect off-screen whenever we can.

Developing the product

Space and Time entered its Controlled Release this month as we onboarded the very first users of our product. In less than a year, our engineering team built a performant HTAP data warehouse from the ground up and ran impressive TPC-H benchmarks. Bringing on our first users was the perfect way to round out many months of hard work. We look forward to continuing to build in 2023 as we move into open Testnet and roll out new features, including the highly anticipated Proof of SQL™.

Accelerating innovation

Some of the most exciting moments of the year were in July and September, when we announced a seed funding round led by Framework Ventures and a strategic funding round led by Microsoft’s M12 Venture Fund. The funding was covered by major media, including TechCrunch,  Nasdaq and CoinDesk, and generated even more excitement around Space and Time and what we’re building.

Building with industry experts

While Space and Time boasts an incredibly talented internal team and stellar leadership, we would not be where we are today without our amazing partners and investors. This year, we announced partnerships with Microsoft, Chainlink, NVIDIA, and more.

Presenting thought leadership

Co-founders Nate Holiday and Scott Dykstra presented at several major Web3 conferences throughout the year. Other members of the team also attended the conferences to develop opportunities for collaboration across the industry.

In May, Scott gave a main-stage presentation at Medici LA about the importance of a decentralized data warehouse as a trustless intermediary between on-chain and off-chain data.

In September, the team attended Chainlink’s SmartCon, where Nate appeared on stage for a fireside chat with Arianna Huffington and Microsoft’s Rashmi Misra and participated in a panel discussion on the Chainlink BUILD program. Throughout the week, Nate also gave interviews with Nasdaq, CoinDesk, and Decrypt to discuss Space and Time’s recently announced strategic funding round and partnership with Microsoft.

In November, Space and Time participated in LA Blockchain Summit, where Scott gave a keynote presentation, moderated a panel, and sat down for interviews with Cointelegraph, Edge of NFT, and Defiance Media. The team also gave demos of the product and explored specific use cases with conference attendees at the Space and Time booth.

Expanding the community

We could not be more grateful for the incredible community that has so enthusiastically supported Space and Time since the beginning. This year, our Twitter following grew by over 11,000 and our Discord server accumulated over 8,000 members. To get plugged in with the Space and Time community, connect with us on Discord, Twitter, Telegram, and LinkedIn.

Until next year!

2022 has been an exciting beginning to the Space and Time journey, but we’re only getting started. We look forward to celebrating more milestones as we continue to build in 2023 and beyond.
